Ive done a few of these but only when the gearbox is out. Pretty sure you can do it in place tho. Only tip i have is to be carefull of the big bolts that go into the end of the gearbox forks there a real fine thread, and it can be tricky to get them in when trying to position the gearbox, and move the gearbox strap, with your 3rd hand of course!? there easy to cross thread, and you dont wana be doin that, especially as nick doesnt work at vw anymore!

I would think you would need to drop the engine to get the box to come back far enough to get the old mount out. There may be enough movement in the box/axles then if not then I guess you will have to loosen the axle tubes from the speing plates as well...

I've noticed that one of my axle boots has split as well so I reckon I may as well drop the engine and box and clean the box up and paint it whilst it is out - it's a lot more work but it will have to be done sometime Would be rude not to rotate those sprint plates a spline or 2 whilst everything is stripped down too Oh, and I guess it's finally time to swap the rear valance to make life easier

Oh yeah u will have to take the engine out defo. and i would also advise to make your new valance removable, makes life so much easier. also if you wana go 2splines ull have to notch ur spring plates, all good fun!

Valance will indeed be removable - I reckon 2 splines might be too much for my purposes anyway
