As most of you know after having a serious crash in my bug i have now replaced the wing!!! however now im having a problem with my headlight (driver side) after taking it to bits to get it off the old wing. Both bulbs work and have not blown (i did check these first!), I can only get all lights to work on main beam (i dont mind blinding the chavs its the other folk i worry about) but when on low beam (normal) neither bulb wants to work. i have now taken it apart and started again too many times to count and patience is wearing thin!!!! Can anybody help me? is there something soooo obvious that im blinded by the light? (excuse the pun!)

Get yourself a test bulb (bulb in a holder with 2 leads) and see if you can make that light up (or use a multi-meter) when connected across the wiring to the bulb - if not then you either have a fuse gone or a bad connection somewhere further up the line.
You can download wiring diagrams for your year of car from theSamba or if you get stuck/none of the above means anything to you then drop round and I will take a look.

yer other half has a multi meter and everything seems fine....its a confusing situation!!! are there different fuses for either side then? as the passenger side is working ok. are you free tomorrow? We have met, im Jeni with the blue 1971 bug.

OK, if you are getting 12v at the bulb holder then either the bulb has blown and you just can't see that it has (check it with the multi-meter on continuity test and don't forget there are 2 positive inputs one for dipped and one for full). If that is ok then it is likely to be a dodgy contact between the bulb and the bulb holder so it's worth taking some emery cloth to the various contacts.
If not then we should be at home most of tomorrow - I will email you my mobile number just in case.
