Nice Wheels! So what colour are you going now? Primer grey for now - got a few issues to sort then may or may not go a different colour - Mike reckons Audi Nimbus Grey would be cool

Right, Spent some time on the car and engine at last yesterday. First off I checked out the fire damage and the damage appears to be limited to the wire from the starter to the voltage regulator so I should just be able to replace that and clean things up. I then moved my attention to the new engine. I have an alternator to get rebuilt for it but can't get the fan off at the moment as I need to get a 36mm socket first. Because of this I decided to clean up all the oil and grease on the engine so I could see what is what. I also replaced all the tinware washers with shake proof washers as quite a bit of the tinware was loose. I have noticed a few things whilst doing this: 1. Cylinder 2 inlet valve the locknut had fallen off of the rocker so the adjustment wasn't fixed and the gap was well out. Must have made a fair bit of a rattle - sorted. 2. The J-tube on the cylinder 1 and 2 side was not tightened down properly and had a quarter of an inch gap - sorted 3. The exhaust manifold had been loose on the cylinder 1 and 2 side as well as evidenced by the carbon blown out of the side 4. The fancy leads don't appear to allow you to run the seals to stop the hot air coming back into the engine through the head tinware where the spark plugs are 5. All the sparkplugs were well sooted up so I guess it has been running quite rich All this will be getting sorted (if it isn't already) when the engine has been installed

Well, 2 alternators (the one that came with then engine and one given to me by someone else) have both came back from the rebuilders as not repairable so I am off to buy a new one in a bit as I want to get an engine in the bug this week

Managed to get the wiring updated for the alternator today and the old engine out. New engine won't go in as the flywheel is too big so need to swap the flywheels over.
The flywheel from the old engine came off alarmingly easily but the one for the new engine isn't giving up without a fight - in fact it's taking me ages to type this as I may well have broken my thumb.
The wrestling will resume tomorrow when Ben returns with a flywheel lock tool and a bigger breaker bar.
We also found that the clutch release bearing was only held in by one clip

OK, some pics of the events of yesterday.... Something missing.... We took the firewall sound deadening out as it was a thin layer of tar board over some house carpet complete with underlay - this seemed like a bit of a fire hazzard to me  Old engine covered in fire extinguisher powder - this will be getting a rebuild as something bigger Ben came over to help me with it (he's done engine swaps before) Playing with flywheels - we had to use the flywheel from the old engine as the one off the 1641 was too big

Getting there Nearly finished Couple of issues - no petrol - turns out the fuel lines were the wrong way round but finding this out flattened the battery so that needs charging. Also, the starter motor doesn't want to turn off - it is fine until you engage the starter with the key then it won't turn off again - I have been advised to strip clean and rebuild the starter

Who told you that, if you pull the small solenoid lead off and it stops then the starter is fine. Also hope you torqued the flywheel nut up correctly as they do come undone and it does wreck your crank

Right, I've been out working on the car again today - found out I had fuel, I definitely had battery but it wasn't starting and I still kept having to use the kill switch to stop the starter as letting go of the key or even turning off the ignition wasn't working  A short prod around with the multi-meter found out that I didn't have 12v to the coil input, but then when I disconnected the coil I did so I swapped the blue bosch coil for a mexican blue bosch coil (which is silver ) I had hanging around. Instantly the car no longer had the odd continuous starter problem and then fired up - I can only assume some kind of short was occurring with the other one as it was a known good coil - although maybe the fire extinguisher powder shorted it out or something (if so that will be 2 coils killed by fire extinguisher). I didn't run the car for long (just a few seconds) as I now need to mount the coil properly, fit some heat riser block offs and the remaining tinware. I did manage to find a breather filter to go onto the filler until I get a proper breather box though Oh, and the wiring needs a spot of tidying up now things are working

Right, as my thumb is still mostly mangled I have enlisted Sally's assistance and got the heat riser block offs fitted along with the remaining tinware.
The engine is running fine but I am still having problems with the solenoid sticking on some of the starts so I am going to replace the starter and solenoid (taking off the switched live the starter keeps running and only resets when you kill the battery) to be on the safe side. I will also replace the wiring in that circuit and do away with the hard start relay the car came with.
