Right, I have started a new thread as my light resto is turning into something else. I have "borrowed" an industrial unit in Kingsteignton for a bit so I can get the body off the pan in the dry which will make the welding man's job easier. It will also let me sort out the dodgy body to pan seal which has been trapped so the front of the bug leaks - between that leaking and the rust at the back leaking it gets rather like a swimming pool in the footwells if you drive it in the wet With any luck I can get the spraying sorted whilst it is there and maybe even the interior will be back in by the time it leaves The unit is going to be ready in a week or so and then expect more updates

""[glow=red,2,300]it gets rather like a swimming pool in the footwells if you drive it in the wet [/glow]"" Carbon, let me know if you solve the water problem in the wet, as I have the same problem in my Buggy

Carbon, let me know if you solve the water problem in the wet, as I have the same problem in my Buggy Dave, you have a buggy - just drill a hole in the floor to let the water drain out

Not that easy mate, its a VW floorpan remember . . . . That means there isn`t any metal strong enough to drill through !!

Right, in the absence of getting space in the industrial unit as yet today has been the first real working on the bug chance I have had - I have stripped down one side and found some nasties. Front wing removed - inner wing not too bad Although it does feature this "interesting" repair A pillar is looking worse than I though Heater channels are solid though Rear inner wing not too bad The front bit of the rear inner wing leaves a bit to be desired though and was mostly made of filler This area is just above the hole and is very thin so will need chopping out All the exposed metal treated with Vactan and the loom ends bagged up to keep them dry That's one side stripped - god knows what the other one will uncover

ha thats a well nice repair! you should leave it there and do all your others like it! start a trend! or maybe not! yeah its always well annoying finding rusty bits, it was like that on my old car but i was kinda governed by nice paint so i didnt really wana start repairing! thats one of the reasons why i sold it cos to many bits were annoying me. But even tho its really annoying i would definately say just go all out and get rid of all the crust dont bother wid fillering jobs, cos when i did it the paint just kept bubbling back and it was just an arse! probly cos i was shit at it! But once its all done you will have total peace of mind, so its worth doin.

I guess I'm a bit nervous about going all out right now - I would like to have 1 year where I get my bug to shows before taking it off the road so I might just get things patched for now and do a full resto next winter

Well, I didn't get much time to work on the car on Sunday as I was putting up a fence. But, I did cover the holes up with some tape to keep out the wet during the week - Ducktape inner arches are all the rage in california you know due to the weight saving I also took loads of piccies like this to help with the rebuild And does anyone know why my US Spec headlamps have a sticker on them saying they are Mercedes???

Managed to get the seats and battery out this morning - cleaned out all the general welding, grinding and cutting detritus and put some vactan on all the interior welds to they don't rust before I get chance to grind them back. I also fitted my Volkszone username stickers When it stops raining again and the vactan is dry I will make a start on the sound proofing in the back of the car.

Busy day yesterday - got the soundproofing in the back (double layer of flashband) - after having covered everything in Vactan and then a layer of stonechip on the pans. I have put thecarpet down behind the seat and the rear seat back in - more to free up space in the garage than anything else. I removed the back wing to size up the amount of filler needed to make good and re-attached the front wing properly. I made a start on the electrical gremlins but discovered water under the bonnet - the pipe to the washer jet had split and dumped water all over the wiper mechanism rusting it nicely and filling the cd player with water. The wiper mechanism has been stripped, wire brushed back and covered in Vactan ready for spraying. The CD player has just spent 2 hours at 50 degrees c in the electronics oven at work to dry out any residual mositure and been cleaned up with IPA - I will give it a go later to see if I managed to save it. Sound proofing in Interior in The full extent of the inner arch and rear quarter repair No wipers or washer jet The state of the wiper mechanism

I managed to make a start on the audio install today after getting back from CVWOC swap meet where I bought some wing top indicators (no one can see the ones in the US spec headlamps) but yesterday the bug stopped starting - it's a suspected solenoid but I think attaching the gearbox earth strap may help as well
